Evolution of the Domain Name Industry

Domain Name IndustryA domain name is an important tool for any business and has become even more important as the Internet has matured. I remember way back in the mid 90′s that purchasing a domain name was an expensive and difficult chore. First you had to apply for the domain and then you would need to send in a check for payment. Living out of the USA would mean a slow delay in securing the domain. The cost was over $100 each year.

Then in the late 90′s domain registration started to evelove and became a bit easier. I remember in the early 2000′s that there were quite a few dodgy domain registers around like RegisterFly who took many peoples money but didn’t give them their domains. Lucky that Godaddy got the rights to nearly all of those domains and gave them back to their rightful owners.

So here we are in the later half of 2010 and we now have a much more settled domain industry and pricing. There are many registers but there are much better rules and regulations that ICann now enforce which means a safer and better environment for the domain customer.

Domains Still Affordable Even After Price Rise

Well there is some good news, even though prices have gone up lately for domain names there is still some good prices offered if you look around. First, check out Godaddy as they often have specials each week. Now you can still register .com’s etc at Dotster for $8.00 with coupon “bargaincat” or transfers at some registers are still below the $8 mark so if your names are going to need renewing soon then consider a transfer over to another register. Mydomain & Domain.com have $7.19 transfers (that would be about .50c higher now since price rises) and thats still a good deal. Godaddy and a couple of other registers offer competitive prices on transfers too with coupons.
